Truthfully, the Institutional Locksmiths'
Association being honored in this manner by the Greater Philadelphia Locksmiths
Association wouldn't have happened a generation ago. Not too long ago, most
associations didn't have a class of membership within their organization for
institutional locksmiths. ILA
– Celebrating 25 Years of In-House Service
Founded in 1983 by twelve locksmiths from New England, the ILA represents locksmiths who generally don't work for for-profit, for-hire, commercial entities. Rather, members of the ILA are employed directly by institutions, such as hospitals, universities, government facilities, and private corporations.
ILA's mission is profoundly simple: To provide low-cost education and professional development to its members. That mission reach was fully realized with the implementation of the Institutional Locksmith Certification Program in 2003. After a time, another mission for the ILA emerged of equal importance, which is to strive to build mutually productive relationships between its members and security industry manufacturers, distributors, and associations.
Institutional locksmiths and the ILA in particular, have since gained much respect in the industry. A sure sign of the ILA's emergence as a respected member in the industry is that the ILA is often asked by others in the industry to send a representative to attend functions, membership meetings, and board meetings of other associations.
On the local level, respect of the ILA is clearly evident by the extraordinarily strong relationship that has developed between the Greater Philadelphia Locksmith Association and the Delaware Valley Chapter of the ILA. The cross-pollination of members and unbridled cooperation between the two boards of directors has lead to increased educational opportunities and social interactions that are beneficial to members of both associations.
Even though the path to respectability has been rocky at times, the ILA is
positioned as never before to represent in-house locksmiths as equals in the
industry. And with the cooperation and the mutual admiration of forward-thinking
associations like GPLA, the mission is more readily achievable than ever.
